One publishes a price ladder on its own homepage and lets you start free. The other prints Contact Sales in every place a number would go. Neither abstracts a lease. Do that part here first.

Compiled from each vendor public homepage, pricing page and sitemap, checked on September 6, 2026. The two lease accounting products here split on one thing before you get anywhere near a feature list: whether the vendor will tell you the price without a sales call.

Verified against each vendor public pages on September 6, 2026. Searching the raw HTML of the Cradle site for a dollar sign returns a real ladder, quoted in its own words below. Searching the Black Owl pricing page the same way returns nothing, and the page prints Contact Sales five times under a heading that calls the plans transparent. Cradle is one of only three lease platforms out of seventeen we have checked that publishes a real number, and that is worth stating plainly even though it competes with us.
Both are lease accounting products, both close the books under ASC 842, and both will do the job for a mid-market lessee. Six questions separate them, and five can be answered from public pages tonight without booking anything.
This is the cleanest split between the two. Cradle answers the question on its own homepage: pricing starts at 99 dollars per month for up to 10 agreements, there is a 199 dollar plan for portfolios up to 20, and anything larger goes to a demo or a phone call. Cradle also states that pricing is based on the number of leases managed and that adding users has no bearing on the price. Black Owl names five tiers, Small Business, Large Companies, Enterprise, CPA Essentials and CPA Advanced, and prices every one of them Contact Sales. If procurement needs a number this quarter, only one of these two can give you one today.
This one decides the matchup outright for public sector and higher education finance teams. Cradle publishes dedicated GASB 87 and GASB 96 software pages and names GASB fifteen times on its homepage. The Black Owl site publishes ASC 842, IFRS 16 and ASPE pages and has no GASB page at all across its twenty-nine URL sitemap. If you are a city, a school district, a utility or a state agency, that absence is not a detail you negotiate around.
Cradle prices by lease count and says plainly that the number of users added has no bearing on the price, which suits a finance team that wants the auditor, the controller and two staff accountants all looking at the same schedule without a per-seat conversation. Black Owl does not publish a seat model either way, so you will find out during the call. If you expect a wide internal audience, ask about it in the first ten minutes rather than the last.
Black Owl publishes industry pages for aviation, oil and gas, transportation and logistics, manufacturing and construction, which describes a lease population made of rigs, fleet and plant rather than buildings. It also runs separate lessor and lessee product paths, which matters if you sit on both sides. Cradle presents as a general lease accounting platform across property and equipment without carving out heavy industry. If most of your ASC 842 population is equipment, or if you account as a lessor, that pulls toward Black Owl regardless of the price gap.
Neither of these products will read your lease PDFs. On the Cradle homepage the words abstract, extract, OCR and upload appear zero times. On the Black Owl site there is no lease abstraction page anywhere. Both are built to calculate correctly once someone has already typed in the commencement date, the base rent schedule, the escalations, the renewal options and the discount rate. That work is real and it is usually four to eight analyst hours per lease when it is done by hand. Whichever platform you pick, budget for it or automate it.
Cradle offers self-serve signup and a free trial, so a controller with ten leases can be calculating a schedule the same afternoon without involving anyone else. Black Owl runs a CPA-led implementation, which is genuinely useful if your lease population is messy or your prior year needs restating, but it is a scheduled project rather than a same-day start. Match this to your deadline honestly. A guided implementation is worth waiting for when the accounting is hard and a waste of six weeks when it is not.
You can settle most of this yourself before either vendor calls you back. The order matters, because the cheapest step eliminates the most options.
Write down how many agreements you actually have and which standard you report under. Under 20 leases and reporting under ASC 842 or GASB puts you squarely inside the published Cradle ladder, and you can price the whole thing without speaking to a salesperson. Over 20, or heavy equipment, or lessor accounting, and the answer opens back up.
Take your messiest lease and your most typical one and pull the terms out of both. Do it here, free, before you look at either accounting platform. You will end the exercise knowing your true field list, your renewal option structure and how bad your worst document is, which is the information both vendors will ask you for anyway.
Open each vendor sitemap and look for the standard you report under. Cradle publishes GASB 87 and GASB 96 pages. Black Owl does not publish a GASB page. This single check ends the comparison for a large group of buyers in about ninety seconds.
By this point you should be down to one product, or to one genuine open question worth a call. Bring your abstracted lease data to that call and ask them to build the schedule from it live. A vendor who can do that in front of you is telling you something a feature grid cannot.
These are the questions that come up when someone has both products open in browser tabs and has to make a recommendation by Friday.
Cradle and Black Owl Systems are both lease accounting platforms, and for a mid-market lessee reporting under ASC 842 either will produce a defensible right-of-use asset, lease liability and journal entry schedule. The comparison is not really about calculation quality. It is about price visibility, standards coverage and who does the data entry, and on all three the public evidence is clear enough that you can decide most of it tonight.
Cradle publishes its price. Its own site states that pricing starts at 99 dollars per month for a plan that manages up to 10 agreements, and that there is a 199 dollar plan for portfolios up to 20. Larger portfolios are directed to book a demo or call. Cradle also states that pricing is based on the number of leases managed and that the number of users added has no bearing on the price, which is unusual in this category and worth confirming in writing.
Black Owl does not publish a price. Its pricing page names five tiers, Small Business, Large Companies, Enterprise, CPA Essentials and CPA Advanced, and every one of them reads Contact Sales. Searching the raw HTML of that page for a dollar sign returns nothing at all, which is notable because the page heading describes the plans as transparent. There is more detail in our writeup of what Black Owl Systems actually costs.
No. The words abstract, extract, OCR and upload appear zero times on the Cradle homepage. Cradle is a calculation and reporting engine that assumes the lease terms are already known. Someone still has to read the document and enter the commencement date, the rent schedule, the escalation clauses, the renewal options and the incentives before Cradle has anything to work with.
No, and there is no abstraction page anywhere on its site. This is the single most common misunderstanding buyers bring to this category, and it costs real money when it surfaces after signature. We have written it up in detail in does Black Owl Systems do lease abstraction.
Cradle does and publishes dedicated software pages for both, naming GASB fifteen times on its homepage. Black Owl publishes ASC 842, IFRS 16 and ASPE Section 3065 pages and has no GASB page across its sitemap. For a public sector, utility or higher education finance team this is not a tiebreaker, it is the whole decision.
Unknown, and anyone who tells you otherwise is guessing. Cradle publishes 99 and 199 dollar per month plans for small portfolios. Black Owl publishes no figure at any tier, so a like-for-like comparison at 50 or 200 leases cannot be made from public information. What you can say honestly is that at the small end Cradle is priced and available today, and at every size Black Owl requires a call before you learn anything.
Cradle yes, Black Owl no. Cradle runs a free trial with self-serve signup. Black Owl routes every tier to Contact Sales and to a CPA-led implementation. If your evaluation window is short, that difference decides how far you can get this week.
That part is the same problem on both platforms, and it is the one neither vendor solves. Doing it by hand runs roughly four to eight analyst hours per lease, which for a 60 lease portfolio is most of a quarter for one person. Abstract the documents first, check the fields against the source clauses, then load clean data into whichever accounting platform you choose. Our lease abstraction tool does that step and exports to Excel, CSV, JSON or an API, and it is the reason this page exists: we are not trying to replace your lease accounting system, we are trying to stop you keying leases into it by hand.
Then widen the shortlist rather than forcing the pair. If price transparency is what you care about, iLeasePro publishes a fuller ladder than either of these, and we compare it in Black Owl Systems vs iLeasePro. If you want the whole field at once, start from the best lease abstraction software roundup and work down.
Still have questions? Our team is happy to help.
Talk to our teamPrice visibility and standards coverage. Cradle publishes a price ladder starting at 99 dollars per month for up to 10 agreements and runs a free trial with self-serve signup. Black Owl prices all five of its tiers Contact Sales and starts with a CPA-led implementation. Cradle also publishes GASB 87 and GASB 96 pages, which Black Owl does not.
Neither one does. Cradle mentions abstract, extract, OCR and upload zero times on its homepage, and Black Owl has no lease abstraction page anywhere on its site. Both expect the lease terms to be entered by a person. Budget four to eight analyst hours per lease for that work, or automate it before the data reaches either system.
Cradle, on the public evidence. It publishes dedicated GASB 87 and GASB 96 software pages and names GASB fifteen times on its homepage. Black Owl publishes ASC 842, IFRS 16 and ASPE Section 3065 pages and no GASB page at all. A city, school district or state agency reporting under GASB should confirm that gap directly with Black Owl before shortlisting it.
No. Cradle states that its pricing is based on the number of leases managed and that the number of users added has no bearing on the price. That suits a team that wants the controller, staff accountants and the external auditor all in the same system. Confirm it in the order form, since published pricing pages change without notice.
Cradle runs a free trial and offers self-serve signup, so a small portfolio can be modeled the same day. Black Owl does not publish a trial and routes every plan to Contact Sales followed by a guided implementation. If you need to prove something works inside a two week evaluation window, that difference matters more than most feature comparisons.
Black Owl publishes separate lessor and lessee product paths, so it is the safer choice if you account for leases on both sides. Cradle presents as a general lease accounting platform without a distinct lessor product path. If you are a landlord or you sublease space, raise this in the first conversation rather than assuming parity.
Above 20. The published Cradle plans cover up to 10 agreements at 99 dollars per month and up to 20 at 199 dollars per month. Beyond that the site directs you to book a demo or call, so larger portfolios are quoted rather than listed. That still puts Cradle ahead of most of this category, where nothing is listed at any size.
Yes, and it makes the choice easier. Abstracting two or three real leases first tells you your true field list, how your renewal options are structured and how bad your worst document is. You will need that information for either vendor conversation, and you will be able to load clean data on day one instead of spending the first quarter keying it in.

Ask a questionEach plan includes a monthly allowance of pages, and the number you get depends on which AI model you choose at extraction time. Base AI processes pages faster; Pro AI delivers the highest field-level accuracy. Your allowance resets on your billing anniversary each month, unused pages do not roll over. A typical commercial lease runs 20 to 60 pages including amendments, so the Starter plan's 2,500 Base AI pages cover roughly 40 to 120 leases a month.
Once your included pages are used up, extraction pauses until the next billing cycle. You can upgrade your plan at any time mid-month, the higher allowance kicks in immediately and you are only charged the prorated difference for the remainder of the period.
Yes. You can switch from monthly to yearly billing at any renewal date to lock in the 50% discount. If you switch mid-cycle, the new rate takes effect at the start of your next billing period. Annual plans are non-refundable after the 14-day cancellation window.
All plans export to Excel XLSX and CSV. Plus adds QuickBooks (QBO) export and financial reports. Pro and Enterprise unlock JSON output via REST API and webhooks so you can push structured data directly into any ERP, RPA platform or internal system.
We do not use your documents to train or improve our own models, and files are encrypted in transit (TLS 1.2+) and at rest (AES-256). Extraction runs through a third-party model provider, so review their terms if your policy requires a contractual no-training commitment. You control retention: documents can be deleted from the workspace at any time, and we will remove everything on request.
Enterprise plans are tailored to your organisation's document volume, compliance requirements and integration needs. Pricing is based on committed monthly page volume with volume discounts at scale.
